(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 12 GIU - Bosnian writer Miljenko Jergović won the 2022 Fiction Prize of the 29th "Latisana for the Northeast" International Literary Award with "The Attempt" (Nutrimenti).

"With this book - Jergovic commented at the award ceremony - I wanted to tell the story of the beginning of the First World War. Even today, we are experiencing a war in Europe. The novel attempts to understand the impossible and the relationship between the victim and the attacker." On the stage at the Odeon Theater in Latisana last night, in addition to Jergovic, were the other two finalists Alberto Garlini with "Il sole senza ombra" (Mondadori) and Mariapia Veladiano with "Adesso che sei qui" (Guanda) and also Matteo Bussola who, with "Il tempo di tornare a casa" (Einaudi), won the Coop Alleanza 3.0 Territory Prize, chosen by the seven members of the territorial jury. Graziano Graziani and Loredana Lipperini, writers and presenters of Fahrenheit on Rai Radio 3, conducted the talks and interviews on stage.

Born in Sarajevo in 1966, Jergović is a writer, journalist, and screenwriter and is considered one of Balkan fiction's most influential voices. "Jergovic's novel recounts the Sarajevo murder of 1914 not so much as a historical reconstruction of the event that triggered World War I, but through the eyes, doubts, and anguish of ordinary people," underlined Cristina Benussi, who chaired the technical jury. "Jergović uses multiple narrative registers - she added - capable of representing aporias, destinies, and anxieties of our time." The "Latisana for the Northeast" Award, featuring the literary production of the cross-border area formed by Triveneto and neighboring countries, is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, among others.
