(ANSA) - TALLINN, 17 GIU - (Interfax) - Estonian and United States military officials have discussed possibilities for expanding defense cooperation between the Estonian Defense Forces and the U.S. National Guard, the press service for the General Staff of the Estonian Defense Forces said on Thursday. Chief of the U.S. National Guard Bureau Gen. Daniel Hokanson is in Estonia on a three-day visit and met with Deputy Chief of the Estonian Defense Forces Maj. Gen. Veiko-Vello Palm. "We have a long-term and fruitful cooperation with the U.S. National Guard Bureau. During the meeting we were able to discuss ways to bring cooperation between the Defense Forces and the National Guard Bureau to a higher level," Palm said. Hokanson will visit a number of countries in the region as part of his European tour and will explore ways to enhance cooperation and get more information to plan joint activities, the General Staff said. In Estonia, the commander focused on the cyber capabilities of the Defense Forces, the reserve system and the contribution of the Kaitseliit paramilitary volunteer organization to national defense. According to the General Staff, Estonia has the closest and most direct cooperation with the Maryland National Guard. Cooperation began after the Defense Forces were reinstated in 1993. The National Guard organized training for the Defense Forces and allied forces in the U.S., and, in particular, trained helicopter pilots for joining the overseas missions of the Defense Forces.
