(ANSA) - ZAGREB - Croatian city of Rijeka (Fiume in Italian) opened its year of European Capital of Culture on Saturday with numerous events and initiatives located in different areas of the town. Rijeka shares the title of European Capital of Culture with the city of Galway, Ireland. The program opened already at 7 am with a bus tour of the city, and continued in the squares and parks of Rijeka, which alongside Split is the main seaport in Croatia. In conjunction with the beginning of the year of the European Capital of Culture, a meeting of the Council of Ministers of Culture of Southeast Europe took place in Rijeka, focusing on the mobility of artists and the cooperation between the countries, as well as collaboration with other international bodies.

In addition to the representatives of the countries of the region, some representatives from Italy, Austria and the EU commission also took part in the meeting. The cultural year of Rijeka coincides with the six-monthly rotating presidency of the European Council which Croatia will hold from January to the end of June. (ANSA).
